Description:

The evolution of psychotherapeutic methods over the past 200 years from Mesmer through the psychoanalytic schools, behaviorism and current cognitive psychology tells a fascinating tale of our evolving understanding of human nature. In this address we will trace the development of fundamental techniques such as suggestion, free association, active imagination, gestalt dialogue, focusing, Erickson’s indirect approaches and what I now call “The Basic Accessing Question.” A new conceptual framework for understanding these psychotherapeutic techniques is proposed in terms of the new nonlinear dynamics of complex, self-organizing systems, the dynamics of the Chaos, for facilitating self-reflection and the evolution of human consciousness.

To list the basic stages in the evolution of psychotherapeutic methods in Depth Psychology.

To recognize the three basic steps of the Basic Accessing Approach to Hypnotherapy.

To recognize three new approaches to Ericksonian Hypnotherapy.

Ernest L. Rossi, PhD, is an internationally renowned therapist, teacher and pioneer in the psychobiology of mind-body healing. The author of more than 24 professional books, Dr. Rossi worked with Milton Erickson for eight years and co-authored three classic volumes on therapeutic hypnosis with him. Rossi has also edited four volumes of Erickson’s Collected Papers and four volumes of Erickson’s Seminars, Workshops and Lectures. He has been conducting research in the psychosocial genomics of ultradian rhythms and their relation to mind-body healing and psychotherapy for over three decades.

Eugene T. Gendlin, PhD, is an American philosopher and psychotherapist who developed ways of thinking about and working with living process, the bodily felt sense and the ‘philosophy of the implicit’. Gendlin received his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1958 from the University of Chicago where he became an Associate Professor in the departments of Philosophy and Psychology.

His philosophical work is concerned especially with the relationship between logic and experiential explication. Implicit intricacy cannot be represented, but functions in certain ways in relation to philosophical discourse. The applications of this “Philosophy of the Implicit” have been important in many fields.

His philosophical books and articles are listed and some of them are available from this web site. They include Experiencing and the Creation of Meaning, (in paperback) and Language Beyond Post-Modernism: Saying and Thinking In Gendlin’s Philosophy (edited by David Levin) , both from Northwestern University Press, l997 and A Process Model.
